1934. Vienna. Stefan is one of the most successful authors in the world – universally admired, widely read, and translated into all languages. He has the life of a wealthy playboy and enjoys only the finer things in life – from luxurious travel around the world to mixing in the company of his most dazzling contemporaries in the most fashionable restaurants in Europe. Two things are clouding his long-term prospects though: the rise of the Nazi Party, and the recent appearance of a woman who he knows… but who he cannot, for some reason, remember…
Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s short story Visit From An Unknown Woman receives its English Language premiere at the Hampstead Theatre following a triumphant season at Vienna’s Josefstadt Theater.
Previous productions from Clare Lizziemore at Hampstead include Amy Rosenthal’s On the Rocks and Nick Payne’s first play Lay Down Your Cross. Other recent productions include Closer, Snowflake, and Bull.
